RE Curriculum
Our school follows the curriculum scheme of work – Come and See – supported by the Archdiocese of Southwark for teaching RE in a Catholic Primary School.
The material has been written by a group of experienced diocesan advisors.
It follows on from successful trialling in schools in England and Wales and is based on the theological foundations of the Second Vatican Council, the Catholic Catechism and the revised RE Curriculum Directory and includes the Catholic attainment levels.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church addresses the search for meaning in life. God’s initiative in Revelation who comes to meet us and our response of faith. (cf. CCC26) This pattern guides the structure of the programme and informs the process of each topic, opened up through; Explore, Reveal and Respond.
In addition to the diocesan strategy we have dedicated themed weeks, for example an ‘Other Faith week’, during different half terms which seeks to support the children in learning about and understanding other faiths.
We have also implemented the new curriculum subject of RHE (Relationships and Health Education) which is taught closely alongside the RE curriculum. We are using the Ten Ten Programme of ‘Life to the Full’. This particular scheme of work focuses on teaching Relationships Education and Health Education within the context of a Christian understanding of human sexuality rooted in the wisdom and teaching of the Catholic Church. This is taught with a spiral approach to learning, in which pupils will revisit the same topics at an age-appropriate stage through their school life. The programme includes teaching about personal health, physical and emotional wellbeing, strong emotions, private parts of the body, personal relationships, family structures, trusted adults, growing bodies, puberty, periods, life cycles, the dangers of social media, where babies come from, an understanding of the Common Good and living in the wider world. The entire teaching is underpinned with a religious understanding that our deepest identity is as a child of God - created, chosen and loved by God. The programme is fully inclusive of all pupils and their families.
